SAMBA [samba]. n. (1923-1945; Brazilian word)

  1. Popular and traditional music and dance of Brazil. Samba is based on a binary beat, and is highly syncopated. A bateria plays the rythmical part, while chords instruments and singers play the tunes. The biggest and best known samba schools are located in the popular districts of Rio de Janeiro: Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Mangueira, Beija Flor, Portela, Viradouro, Unidos da Tijuca...
  2. Samba de enredo: samba with songs, played with amplified chords instruments, choirs and solists singers. Samba reggae: sambas where the rythmical basis comes from Jamaican reggae music, with its off-beat rythm and its sensuality. Olodum is a samba reggae group.

SAMBISTA [sambista]. n.m. (19??; Brazilian word)

  1. Person who takes part into the activities of a samba group or a samba school. Dancers (pasistas), percussionnists (rítmistas) are sambistas.

BATUCADA [batukada]. n. (1956; from Port. batucada: beating)

  1. Piece that is entirely based upon percussions; its rythmical structure follows the samba pattern. Samba batucada is typical of carnival street music in Rio de Janeiro.
  2. Also used to call the percussionist group that plays this kind of music. The batucada was slowly walking in the street, surrounded by the unbridled crowd. Syn.: bateria.
